Support University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center at the “Miracles Happen” benefit
The Diana Hyland Miracle Fund’s second annual “Miracles Happen” benefit, takes place at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, October 24 at Shaker Heights Country Club, 3300 Courtland Blvd. in Shaker Heights. The event raises funds for advanced breast cancer research at UH Ireland Cancer Center.

The Diana Hyland Miracle Fund’s mission is to further research for advanced breast cancer – focusing on new theories, trials and treatments aimed at managing cancer and extending lives. Every dollar raised goes towards clinical research at UH Ireland Cancer Center.

Located near the atrium entrance to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, the Safety Store offers a wide range of safety products, including baby proofing items, car and booster seats, medical alert IDs, carbon monoxide detectors, and smoke detectors as well as special needs and sports safety items including wheelchair ponchos and evacuation mats and bike and ski helmets. University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center hosts the American Girl Fashion Show to benefit children’s cancer research
Hosted by UH Ireland Cancer Center, the American Girl Fashion Show takes place Sunday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven, 6111 Landerhaven Drive in Mayfield Heights. Enjoy refreshments, enter to win door prizes, and learn how clothing has changed over the years to reflect history, culture, and girls' individual styles while supporting children’s cancer research at UH Ireland Cancer Center.

Autism seminar series presented by University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital
The Division of Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics and Psychology at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital will present six seminars on autism. Events take place Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m. at UH Westlake Health Center, 960 Clague Road, Westlake, Ohio.

Dates and Topics:

  • October 21, 2009 – Social/Communication Issues
  • November 18, 2009 – Adapting Reading and Writing for Children with ASD
  • January 20, 2010 – Sleep and Preschool Issues in ASD
  • March 10, 2010 – Adolescent Issues in ASD
  • April 21, 2010 – Legal Issues Affecting Children with ASD

The series is designed to improve understanding of the medical, behavioral, social, sensory and educational issues related to Autism Spectrum Disorders. An emphasis will be placed on practical intervention techniques. Presenters are local and national experts in the field of autism.

The cost is $60 for the entire series. Participants can join at any point in the series. Students and paraprofessionals can join for $25. To register, call 216-844-1289.

University Hospitals MacDonald Women's Hospital offers free mammograms
University Hospitals MacDonald Women's Hospital is offering free screening mammograms to women between the ages of 40 and 65 with little or no insurance coverage.

The free mammograms take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., on:
-Saturday, Nov. 14

Registration is required. Call 216-844-3097 to find out if you are eligible and to arrange for free transportation or free parking.

Why get a mammogram? Your chances of getting breast cancer increases with age, so the older you get, the more important it is to get a mammogram. Mammograms can find a lump before it is seen or felt.
