2-Year-Old Boy Dies in Ceiling Collapse
ASHTABULA - A 2-year-old boy has died from injuries he suffered from a ceiling collapse at a home his family had just moved into.

Little Markus Copeland and his relatives moved into the rental property in Ashtabula earlier this month and had been in the house for only about 12 hours when a ceiling in the living room collapsed on top of Marcus.

His father, Mark Copeland, tells Fox 3 News "it sounded like a tornado hit the house, I mean it sounded like the whole house was falling apart, it was caving in on him. So I ran over there and grabbed him and noticed he was bleeding out of the back of his head and I yelled to call 9-1-1."

Markus had suffered severe head trauma. He was transferred from Ashtabula to Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital in Cleveland, where he passed away Saturday.

His parents are devastated by the loss and angry about the way it happened. Mark Copeland says "I just wish I could have been there for him, you know I wish I could have been there and covered him." Markus' mother, Maria White, told Fox 8 "it's terrible and my life is done, my baby is gone."

The family says there had been a crack in the ceiling at the home the week before Mark Copeland and his son moved in. They were told a handy man hired by the owner patched the ceiling with an fresh layer of plaster, but the family believes he may have put it over the old plaster. Copeland says "so if you add more plaster to it, it's just going to create more weight and you can just imagine what's going to happen, you know that's just common sense."

Fox 8 News contacted the owner of the house. He declined comment on the death of Markus Copeland and referred all questions to his insurance company.

Markus will be laid to rest on Thursday, his family wonders about all the great things he could have done in his life and what kind of lives they will lead now that he's gone. His father says "it's never going to be the same, without my son because he was my whole world man."

The family has now hired an attorney, and they plan to take legal action against the owner of the house.
