CLEVELAND -
Heading home for the holidays is going to cost you even more this year.
Ginny Gabor enjoys traveling for pleasure yet she's growing tired of the games that come with every ticket she buys. Checking her first bag at Cleveland Hopkins Airport cost an additional $20. Gabor knows anything she has to eat or drink onboard her flight will be extra too. "What I would like to see is a fare that is all inclusive", she says, "and everybody knows exactly what they're paying"
Gabber's frustration comes as several big airlines have announced the addition of a $10 surcharge for most tickets purchased for travel on the three busiest days of the holiday season. The Sunday after Thanksgiving is traditionally the busiest travel day of the year followed by January 2nd and 3rd.
"I think they're grabbing at anything that they can to have additional revenue because they have canceled so many flights" says Cora Zupan, a travel specialist with All Travel in Brecksville. Zupan says Southwest and Continental have not announced plans to join American, United, US Airways and Delta in adding the surcharge to passengers tickets.
Rick Seaney from FareCompare.com says the airlines no doubt added the fee rather than raise base fares. He says it's a quick, targeted way to charge more on specific days.
Zupan says this isn't the first time the airlines have resorted to adding surcharges in an attempt to increase revenue. "They had that quite a few years ago where holiday fares were more expensive then the regular every day fares, this is nothing new."
