WAKEMAN, Ohio -- The Wakeman Police Department is investigating the deaths of almost two dozen cats.

Chief Tim Hunker says someone is likely using anti-freeze to poison the animals which have been found dead over the past few weeks. "Once I started looking into this, I found a couple carcasses. One behind a residence on Verlin Street, one behind the old fire station," says Chief Hunker.

Barry Busek has lost four cats. "I, I, I just, it's unthinkable because I just don't believe anybody would do it, you know?"

"Every community has a problem with cats, I don't care where you live. Maybe it's not on your street, but there are strays everywhere now and I think someone got fed-up and started taking this into their own hands," says Chief Hunker.

Veterinarian Joe Priess says, "cats and dogs find the taste of anti-freeze to be sweet, they like it. Once they drink it, it causes severe kidney failure and that can result in death."

Dr. Priess also says prevention is key. "By prevention, we mean the safest place for any cat or dog is indoors. If they're outdoors, they should definitely be supervised."

It's disturbing to many in town, where a cat was also found dead on Monday. The chief says it was shot with an arrow, but it's not related.

Anyone with any information is being asked to call Wakeman Police.
