EASTLAKE, Ohio -
Just days after being rescued from a burning building, a family's beloved dog, died on Saturday.
Last Tuesday morning, flames ripped through the Windsor Lodge Apartments on Lakeshore Blvd., in Eastlake. Crews from at least seven Lake County fire departments assisted with the fire. Firefighters rescued Richard Paulsen, and his dog Dakota, from his 1st floor apartment.
Another woman had to be rescued from a second floor window of the apartment building. She was uninjured.
Paulsen was unconscious when he was pulled out of his smoke-filled apartment. He was put in ICU at Lake West Hospital and sedated, unaware of the damage done to his apartment, or his beloved Dakota.
The dog was taken out on stretcher, and rushed to the Great Lakes Veterinary Specialist hospital. Dakota was burned on over 50% of his body, and suffered severe smoke damage to his lungs.
Sadly, according to the Paulsen Family's facebook page, Dakota succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.
The family also took to their facebook page to thank the veterinarians who worked so hard to save Dakota.
"Thank you to Dr. Gallash and Dr. Heldmann and all the other Dr's and staff members at the Great Lakes Veterinary Specialists who did their very best to help Dakota recover from treating him with what they had and when it was not looking good, to calling across the U.S. for other solutions and for also keeping him comfortable. Also, for taking the time to update all the people who called their facility concerned about Dakota's condition."
Richard Paulsen remains in the hospital recovering from his injuries. According to the family's facebook message, his condition has improved.
