George Brentar was a 22-year veteran of the force who was killed on October 10, 2007. He was chasing a speeding car on Lakeland Avenue when he lost control of his Crown Victoria cruiser and crashed.
Brentar left behind a wife and two children and his widow's attorney says she's now moving ahead with a wrongful death lawsuit against Ford. "Would you want your family in this car, would you be in this car? Absolutely not," says attorney Brad Lakin.
Lakin filed the case Monday in Cuyahoga County and he claims the officer wouldn't have lost control if the car had an electronic stability control system. The attorney also says the car exploded on impact because of the design. "Unfortunately, it does have a history of fuel-fed fires. There's been over 50 incidents involving burns and/or deaths from fires with the crown victoria police car," says Lakin.
A Ford Motor Company spokesperson tells Fox 8, "Our sympathy goes out to Mr. Brentar's family. However, we do not believe that Ford is to blame for this accident, which involved a violent collision with a pole that intruded about five feet into the car. The Ford Crown Victoria is designed to the highest rear-crash safety standards in the industry. No vehicle could be expected to prevent all injuries in this type of collision."
This isn't a new allegation against Ford. The Crown Victoria has been blamed for other deaths in cases also argued by Lakin. He says Officer Brentar's death can't be in vain. "They're a strong-knit family and loving. They have one another and they're doing the best they can under the circumstances."
