It was just after 5 a.m. Sunday, when the pick-up truck careened out of control on a sharp curve on State Route 39 outside Dover, and rolled over on its side.
Hazel Bailey, an off duty paramedic and her husband Ron, stopped to check on the driver, and quickly realized he was in trouble.
Mrs. Bailey says "he was in the vehicle and the vehicle was at that time on fire. There were flames coming out the side on the right hand front side, a lot of smoke."
Ron Bailey discovered a propane tank in the bed of the burning pick-up, and quickly tossed it into a nearby field.
Bailey then realized the driver was unconscious behind the wheel, so he took matters into his own hands.
He told Fox 8 "I grabbed a sledgehammer and broke the back window out and then I got him awake enough that he rolled the side window down and I come around and helped him, pulled him out of the side window."
With the help of another passerby, the Bailey's helped carry the driver, 28-year-old David Yoder of Millersburg, a safe distance from the truck.
The Ohio Highway Patrol calls them life savers.
Sgt. Tim Timberlake says "I think if they wouldn't have been there to get him out of the vehicle that he probably would have burned up in the vehicle."
Hazel Bailey says "you know I really feel that we were supposed to be there you know, thank God we were there because if it had been a few more minutes, he would not have lived."
An investigation by the highway patrol revealed David Yoder was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, and has a history of drinking and driving.
Sgt. Timberlake says "he has two prior OVI convictions in the last six years, this would be his third offense in six years."
Fox 8 could not reach David Yoder for comment, but his mother told us by phone that the family is grateful for the efforts of the good Samaritans.
