ELYRIA, Ohio--- After suffering extreme starvation and neglect, two great danes are on the road to recovery.

Deuce and his daughter Sky are making major improvements. Both have gained 10 pounds over the past few weeks.

On Christmas Day, Lorain Police officers responded to a domestic violence call. When they arrived, police say they found three great danes outside with no food or water and covered in feces.

The dog's owner, 27-year-old Jamie Lee Chandley has pleaded no contest to animal cruelty. Chandley has since been sentenced to five years probation.

Unfortunately, a few days after the dogs were rescued, the adult female named Foxy passed away.

During their stay at the Friendship APL in Elyria, Deuce and Sky have regained much of their strength.

"The slow, long process of mental recovery can take months upon months. Deuce will probably be ready before Sky. Sky shows a lot more territorialism and aggression, particularly with food. That's why Sky is going to take a lot more time. That's because she's known no other life that the one she's lived in that environment," said Friendship APL Exective Director Greg Willey.

Sky and Deuce are going to be transferred to a great dane rescue group in the next week or so. Eventually, they will both be up for adoption.
