CLEVELAND -- Celebrities walking the red carpet all get asked the same question. What are you wearing? Sunday when they walk the red carpet for the Oscars, workers at the Hugo Boss plant in Brooklyn hope they won't be wearing one of the suits they made.
Actor Danny Glover sent a letter to all Oscar attendees asking them not to wear Hugo Boss designs in an effort to support the workers of the Brooklyn plant.
The plant is slated to close on April 27 after the company said assessments showed the plant is not globally competitive.
Wanda Navarro has worked at the plant for nine years, and she wants to continue working there. She sees Glover's effort as a glimmer of hope that she will keep her job.
"If people keep wearing they're gonna make good money, but if for one day these people stop they're gonna make these people think and maybe we've got a chance," Navarro said.
In a written statement, a Hugo Boss spokesman says, "This facility is not globally competitive. HUGO BOSS tried in vain to find ways to make it globally competitive and when that effort failed, we acted in the best interests of shareholders and customers by deciding to close the facility."
Hugo Boss is offering severance to workers at the plant. The company will also offer outplacement and professional reorientation training for employees.
