KENT -- Police are investigating the armed robbery of two Kent State University students.

The victims told police they were robbed at gunpoint, about 2 a.m. Saturday morning, in the parking lot of the Silver Oaks Apartment complex, which is a short distance from campus.

Shortly after the incident, Kent State sent a message to the University community via its Flashline alert service.

One suspect is described as a thin, white male, about six-feet tall; another as a stocky Hispanic male approximately 5'9'' tall, and the third suspect is described as a black male, 5'9'' tall with a medium build.

The students say the men were driving a gray, four-door Ford Contour.

According to FBI statistics, KSUs Kent campus is considered one of the safest university campuses in the Midwest.

However, Saturday's incident follows the brutal beating death of 23-year-old Kent student, Chris Kernich, and investigators say it bears a striking similarity to a series of armed robberies that happened over the course of two days in late August, on and around the KSU campus.

Police arrested two suspects shortly after, but a third suspect, also described as a Hispanic male, is still on the loose.
