Thousands are expected to gather to honor fallen Elyria Police Officer James Kerstetter who died in the line of the duty earlier this week.
Memorial services for 43-year-old Officer Kerstetter, will be held this weekend.
Elyria Police Chief Duane Whitely tells Fox 8 News, Officer Kerstetter was shot on Monday, while answering a call regarding a man exposing himself to a child and kicking in a neighbor's window. The shooting happened after 10:00 p.m. in the 300 block of East 18th Street .
Police say the suspect, 58-year-old Ronald Palmer, shot Kerstetter when he went inside Palmer's house. Police said Palmer then ran out of the house and was shot outside.
Elyria Police responded to the scene and shot and killed the suspect," Whitely tells Fox 8 News. "Officer Kerstetter was taken to Elyria Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead."
The Lorain County Coroner's office determined Kerstetter died of multiple gunshot wounds and head injuries.
Officer Kerstetter is survived by his wife Tammy, and three young daughters, Misty, 17, Shelby, 14, and Bailey, 8.
Visitation for Officer Kerstetter's services will take place at the Bauer-Laubenthal-Mercado Funeral Home on 38475 Chestnut Ridge Road in Elyria Friday.
The public is welcome from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The funeral will follow on Saturday and is open to police and family only. The service will be held at the Lorain County Community College Ewing Field House in Elyria.
Officer Kerstetter will be buried at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Avon, Ohio. Only the Elyria Police Department and family are permitted at the cemetery.
Members of the public who wish to honor Officer Kerstetter are invited to line the motorcade route to pay their respects.

"We're going to help them get through this," said Kerstetter's sister, Kelly Strickler. "Misty will graduate, his first and oldest will be graduating in June and she'll be going off to college, Ohio State. He knew that she got accepted there and we'll help them get her and the rest of those girls where they need to be, where they want to be."
Officer Kerstetter is a 15-year veteran on the force. Those who know him said he had an incredible sense of humor and was known by the nickname "The Sponge" because of the way he accepted over-time hours to support his family.
The police chief in Elyria tells Fox 8 News that the community lost "one of the best."
"He's always laughing, in the 15 years I knew him he's never been in a bad mood. If he is, you certainly didn't see it." said Elyria Police Chief Duane Whitely, "Not only was he not in a bad mood, but if you were occupied or down about something, he'd make one comment and you'd be laughing. That's just the way Jim was."
"It's a shock to all of us," said Cindy Ferrebee who placed flowers outside the front door of the police station. "Just a wonderful person, compassionate as a man and as a police officer."
The men and women who worked side-by-side with Kerstetter are struggling to come to terms with his death.
Dozens of police cruisers, with lights flashing, escorted the officer's body from Elyria to the Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office. It was a powerful scene along Interstate 90 on Tuesday morning.
Kerstetter, who was a sheriff's deputy before joining the Elyria Police Department, earned a Community Service Award in 2000. Then in 2003, he was honored with a Police Commendation Medal and a Medal of Merit.
Just last week, Kerstetter was praised for assisting in the rescue of a family from a burning home.
