BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, Ohio - A local college student says a Brooklyn Heights police officer saved his life when a car careened out of control on an ice covered highway last weekend.

18-year-old Mariusz Trzeciak says his car spun out on the Jennings Freeway ramp to I-480 on Saturday, and he was relieved when a police officer quickly arrived at the scene to help.

Mariusz, a freshman at Notre Dame College, says Lt. John Lambert had just returned his driver's license, when a second car spun out of control on the icy pavement and barreled toward them.

Trzeciak says "I'm looking at my wallet and he initially just taps me on the shoulder as he's running so I turned and I see the car coming at me, maybe 8 feet from me so the first thing I did was I just ran to my left and jumped and that's, I think I blacked out from there because I don't remember like hitting the car or hitting the floor."

Lt. Lambert suffered a broken pelvis and an orbital fracture above his left eye. Trzeciak says the officer is a lifesaver, telling Fox 8 "if it wasn't for him, I wouldn't have seen it, it would have smashed me without me even noticing it but yes definitely, that touch definitely made me look up and if it wasn't for that I would be dead probably right now."

The driver of the car that slid out of control, tried to offer aid to Lt. Lambert and police say she is distraught about the crash. But Mariusz says "it was an accident, it wasn't any of her fault, it just happens, I mean it could have been anyone, it was just an accident."

Trzeciak, who's a member of the soccer team at Notre Dame, says he finds the selflessness of John Lambert inspiring.

He says "you can't thank him enough you know I mean, soccer player and my whole career is ahead of me and it's great that he was able to think of someone else in such a situation, I mean he didn't have a lot of time to think of somebody else is really extraordinary."

John Lambert is in fair condition at Metro Health Medical Center. Mariusz Trzeciak says he is looking forward to thanking him in person.
