CLEVELAND -- A mail carrier is out of the hospital after he was attacked by a vicious pit bull on the city's west side.

Thursday afternoon, Thomas Hughes was delivering mail on Mapledale Avenue in Cleveland when he was mauled by a pit bull.

"I was delivering at another house. I came down the steps and I didn't have time to get my mailbag in position or get my pepper spray," says Hughes.

Witnesses say the dog ran out of the door and before the mail carrier could react, he was being attacked.

"The dog was attacked me out of nowhere. There wasn't a bark or anything, it was just on me," says Hughes.

Hughes had to get twelve stitches on his arms. He received a cut on his stomach and a puncture wound to his leg.

The dog's owner claims the pit bull got out of the house when she wasn't looking. "He's normally locked up," says Nicole Peters.

Peters has been charged for failure to control a vicious animal. She was also cited because the dog did not have a microchip. "It's the first time he did it. I was shocked," says Peters.

The pit bull was taken into by the dog warden and is now at the Cleveland City Kennel. Although a judge will decide what will happen to the dog, the owner told FOX8 she does not want to take the dog back. The owner is facing up to 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
