MENTOR, Ohio -- "Operation: Haiti Relief" begins on Thursday outside FOX 8 and donors are gathering supplies for the drive.

"I overheard it on TV and thought it would be a great idea for us to do here as a whole, as an agency," said Denice Winter. Winter is a workshop specialist at the Lake County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.

"We provide vocational training, work opportunities and rehabilitation for individuals with developmental disabilities," said Lynnmarie Landwei-Phillips, who is an administrator of the facility.

The staff started taking donations on Tuesday but the students soon learned about the campaign to help in Haiti and they wanted to contribute their lunch money. "This is your pop money," said Winter. "If you want to give, we'll talk with your family and your guardians and make sure you can do this. Everybody, once they found out what it was for, they wanted to donate."

More than $300 was raised in one night. The money was used to buy formula and other supplies needed in Haiti and it will get there with the help of MedWish International. The Cleveland-based non-profit has worked for nearly 20 years to get medical supplies and aid to third-world countries.

MedWish will be loading-up all the donations and arranging for their delivery to Haiti.
