Suspect Found in Construction Zone Hit and Run
INDEPENDENCE, Ohio -- Police positively identify both the vehicle and the suspect Monday in a construction zone hit-and-run.

Detectives went to an Independence area Mercedes-Benz dealership with parts recovered from the hit-skip accident on March 28th to try and identify the model and year of the car in question. While at the dealership, collision repair personnel said they had a customer who needed repairs that matched the type of damage from the hit-and-run.

When that customer showed-up for the appointment, their black 2006 Mercedes E 350 was positively identified as the vehicle from the accident. Police took the owner into custody and the vehicle was impounded. They are continuing to investigate the accident.

The injured man worked for A & A Safety, a subcontractor on the project to add a third lane to the freeway between Rockside and Wallings Roads. Jeff Chase, a company manager declined to name the employee. He visited him at Metrohealth Medical Center Sunday and told Fox 8 News he's improving after breaking his right leg and ankle. He said the employee is still being tested for injuries to his ribs and shoulder. The employee was marking lines for a paint truck to shift traffic away from the center for a new phase of the project when the incident happened. "We're the first guy to put a device or a cone out. Somebody's got to do it. So we're the first guys there to set up that zone. The police are there to help us and everything else. But it just takes one errant driver to cause a fatality or serious injury" Chase said.

Even before the accident, ODOT spokeswoman Jocelyn Clemmings says the state was planning a work zone "safety awareness" campaign for the week of April 6th. She says 15 people died in work zone accidents in Ohio in 2008 That includes all motorists, their passengers and construction workers.
