NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio -- A North Carolina social studies teacher, who grew up in Ohio, is facing charges for being sexually involved with some of his female students.
Early Saturday morning, New Philadelphia Police arrested 50-year-old Doug Ebersbach at his mother's house in New Philadelphia.
According to the Davie County Sheriff, Ebersbach used to teach in the Buckeye State. Several years ago, he accepted a teaching position at Davie Middle School in North Carolina.
Investigators say Ebersbach was doing more than just teaching. Detectives believe he was preying on 12, 13, and 14-year-old girls.
The sheriff would not reveal exactly what the teacher was doing with the students but he did say, "It's very alarming to our school officials. They didn't have a clue," said Sheriff Andy Stokes.
Investigators now believe there could be as many as 20 to 30 female victims.
Earlier this week, a Davie County woman called police claiming Ebersbach broke into her house. According to investigators, Ebersbach didn't break-in. Detectives believe the woman's 13-year-old daughter gave Ebersbach a key to the house. Police think Ebersbach and the girl were involved in a sexual relationship.
As soon as the girl's mother filed a police report, Ebersbach resigned from his teaching job and skipped town.
Friday afternoon, authorities issued an arrest warrant. Saturday morning, Ebersbach was taken into custody at his family home in New Philadelphia.
Ebersbach is charged with one count of breaking and entering, four counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, and one count of indecent liberties with a minor.
Investigators believe more charges may be filed. Sheriff Stokes say the extradition process will begin on Monday.
