CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The body found in Lake Erie late Monday afternoon is that of Emma Nahas according to officials with the Cuyahoga County Coroner's office.
Around 4:15 p.m. Monday, a resident near East 250th Street and Lakeshore Boulevard in Euclid alerted authorities of a body floating in the water.
"We received a call of a body about 30 yards out into the lake," said Euclid police chief Jim Repicky.
Nahas' family was called to the area where the body was discovered. Fox 8 News Kevin Freeman reports, the family followed coroner's office officials back to their Cedar Avenue location.
Nahas, 20, had been missing since July 8th after swimming in the lake during a boating trip.
According to investigators with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft, Nahas joined friends and acquaintances on a 48-foot Sundance Sea Ray yacht for an afternoon on Lake Erie. Investigators say around 8:00 p.m. that evening, Nahas and a man jumped willingly into the water. Soon after, others on the boat heard calls for help.
Officials say the man calling for help returned to the boat, but Nahas did not.
On Monday friends and family gather at the scene feared for the worst.
"It's pretty evident that it's her, I received a text from her mom saying it's her, after it happened," said Nahas' friend Christopher Michael. "Everyone's been preparing for the worst and hoping for the best."
Emma's family and friends had been actively searching for her since she disappeared.
The coast guard cited the owner of the boat for boating under the influence. Citation comes with fines and concludes the Coast Guard's investigation. Other charges will be up to ODNR.
