CLEVELAND -
A spokesperson for Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Bill Mason tells Fox 8 News that initial charges were filed Tuesday against Randie J. Winston for the murder of mail carrier Daniel Kondas last week in Maple Heights.
Charges against Winston, 19, of Cleveland, include aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, kidnapping and having weapons while under disability for a previous assault delinquency in juvenile court. He is facing the death penalty.
Winston's initial court appearance has been scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 10 a.m.
Winston is accused of shooting Kondas, 53, of Garfield Heights, while the 23-year U.S. Postal Service veteran was delivering mail on his usual route. The shooting happened on Sept. 17. Kondas was found in the driveway of 14705 Corridon Avenue, transported to Marymount Hospital and then taken by Life Flight to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead about 13 hours after he was shot in the head.
Witnesses saw a man running from the scene, and Winston was arrested in a home one block away. Maple Heights police Lt. Tim Love says Winston gave detectives a statement about the shooting. Details of the statement have not been made public.
Authorities say robbery appears to be the motive behind the shooting. A neighbor who lived near the area where Kondas was shot told Fox 8 News that Winston appeared desperate for money.
The Fox 8 I-Team's Bill Sheil earlier reported that the 19-year-old apparently does not have a record as an adult. However, officials say that he has nine files as a juvenile ranging from custody cases to cases for delinquency and traffic violations.
Juvenile officials could not say if violence was in Winston's background. They released only limited information about him, but promised that all of the public files would be available early next week.
