GRAFTON TOWNSHIP, Ohio - The Elyria Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a double fatal traffic accident that occurred early Thursday morning just after midnight, Fox 8 News reports.

The crash, which involved a pickup and tractor-trailer, happened on State Route 57 near Highland Drive.

The pickup was traveling northbound when it crossed the double yellow center line and was struck by the semi, which was going southbound. Both vehicles became fully engulfed as a result of the collision.

The driver of the pickup, Donald Berg, 49, of Columbia Station, was pronounced dead at the scene, as was his only passenger. The passenger's name is being withheld pending family notification.

The big rig was driven by William Bennett, 35, of Louisville. He suffered minor injuries and was treated and released at the scene by Grafton Village EMS.

Bennett was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident. Seat belt usage for the pickup passengers, however, is not yet known.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and had to be towed from the scene.

It is currently unclear whether or not alcohol was a factor. The crash remains under investigation.

A portion of State Route 57 was closed to traffic for much of the morning, but the Ohio Department of Transportation has since reopened all lanes.
