KENT, Ohio -
A popular former northeast Ohio mayor has been cited and summoned to appear in court for allegedly attempting to steal a box of crackers and a bottle of wine from a local market, Fox 8's Dave Nethers reports.
According to Portage County Sheriff David Doak, recently retired Kent Mayor John Fender was not arrested. Rather, a deputy simply cited him for shoplifting.
The alleged incident in question happened Dec. 26, 2009, at the Acme Fresh Market on State Route 59 in Kent. Doak says the report created by his office indicates that Fender, 74, tried to steal a box of crackers and a bottle of wine.
Fender is scheduled to appear in Portage Municipal Court on Jan. 21. Approximately one month prior to the alleged incident, the city's council chambers were renamed in his honor.
Fender was first elected in 1997. His 12 years in office make him the longest-serving mayor in Kent history.
