LORAIN, Ohio -
A Lorain woman pleaded no contest to animal cruelty charges and was sentenced to 90 days behind bars for abusing and neglecting her three Great Danes, Fox 8 News reports.
Jaime Lee Chandley, who faced three counts of cruelty to animals, appeared in Lorain Municipal Court on Tuesday morning. In addition to the jail time, the judge fined her $750 and ordered her not to own or harbor any domestic pets.
When police responded to a domestic call at Chandley's home on Eagle Avenue in Lorain on Christmas, they discovered the three dogs living in a filthy, unheated pen. Rescuers say that the animals might have gone without food for as long as a month. One of the dogs weighed a meager 58 pounds.
When healthy, veterinarian Dr. Virginia Hudson says that the Great Dane in question should tip the scales at a figure between 110 and 150 pounds.
"It's hard," Hudson says. "It's hard to see an animal that's neglected like these are because all it takes is a little bit of food and love to take care of (them). They definitely were neglected."
The dogs are now being treated at the Lorain Animal Clinic, which is accepting donations to help in their recovery. If you would like to donate, call (440) 282-6769.
For information on the possibility of adopting any of the Great Danes, call the Friendship Animal Protective League at (440) 322-4321.
