MASSILLON, Ohio - Somebody call Guinness. A couple of growers near Massillon are boasting a world-record breaking pumpkin, weighing in at nearly a ton.

Nick and Christy Harp of Jackson Township are the proud parents of a 1725 pound pumpkin. It's enough to make Charlie Brown and the whole Peanuts clan green with envy.

The big moment took place on Saturday at the Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers weight-off in Green Township.

"I kind of knew I had a good shot at the world record, but when it hit the scale, it was just happy, I was crying, thought I was gonna pass out," Christy explains.

"Nick got emotional, Christy got emotional and I have to admit her mother and I did too," says Christy's father, Denny Dieffenbaugh. "It was a very proud moment for us."

For Christy, growing gargantuan gourds has become a personal challenge since the eighth grade, and is now a bit of a hobby at the family farm. This year, she and her husband decided to have a little contest.

"Last year he beat me by 200 pounds. This year I beat him by 400 pounds. Very good year! My pumpkin, my side of the patch! We separate the patch and never step foot on the other side!"

Christy says at one point in August, the pumpkin was growing 33 pounds a day.

So what's her secret?

"We filled up the soil with lots of compost, coffee grounds, cow manure, and then we pick out seeds with good genetics."

But Christy says she's still on pins and needles. There are two more weeks of weigh-ins and that means there is a possibility that another grower could snag the title. Still, Christy's taking in all in stride.

"Hey, even if I get beat I was the world record holder for at least a week."

Last year the Harps made boats out of their giant gourds, but this year Christy says they're planning to take their great pumpkin to the Big Apple, for some professional carving.
