CLEVELAND -
A large shipment of H1N1 vaccines to Cleveland's Health Department led to the city's first large scale vaccination clinic Tuesday.
People lined up out the doors of the Gunning Recreation Center to get their shot.
The target groups of pregnant women, children, medical workers and people with underlying health issues are still the only people eligible for the shots. Health Department Director Matt Carroll says they hope that will change soon.
"Really we just got a large number of doses in the last week or so that we can do something like this so it's the first chance we've had to do it and eventually it will open up to more people and more places," Carroll said.
Carroll says the health department currently has about 8,000 doses.
The whole process moved quickly. After the initial line dissipated, people were walking in and out within 20 minutes. Many in line say they have been searching for the shot everywhere.
"It's been crazy trying to find one. I've been calling and trying everywhere but it's been impossible but I'm glad I came tonight it went quickly smoothly I'm glad I came," Mandie Verba said.
The health department will host another shot clinic Thursday November 19th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Zelma Watson George Recreation Center, 3165 Martin Luther King, Junior Boulevard.
Meanwhile, the Cuyahoga County Board of Health will administer free H1N1 vaccinations at four locations around town on Saturday.
This mass clinic is open to those most at risk from complications of H1N1 -- including pregnant women, caregivers of children younger than six months of age, health care and EMS workers, anyone from six months of age to 24 years and people aged 25 to 64 with compromised immune systems.
The clinics will take place Saturday 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the following locations:
North Olmsted Middle School 27351 Butternut Ridge Road North Olmsted
Orange High School 32000 Chagrin Blvd. Pepper Pike
Lombardo Drive 4141 Rockside Road Seven Hills
Garfield Mall Turney Road and Rockside Road Garfield Hts.
According to officials with the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, up to 3,000 does will be made available at each location.
