LAGRANGE, Ohio -
The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash at an intersection where a 16-year-old girl was killed one year ago.
Patrolmen say 82-year-old Paul Skeen of Elyria, ran the stop sign at the intersection of Whitehead Road and State Route 303. Skeen's car was hit by a car driven by 73-year-old Donald Marsh of Sylvania.
Skeen was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center where he later died.
The accident is similar to the one that killed 16-year-old Molly Webber of LaGrange. Molly was the passenger in a car headed east on State Route 303 last October, when a car driving north on Whitehead Road ran the stop sign hitting the car Molly was riding in.
People who live near the scene say accidents are too common.
"I would think one fatality would be enough to put a flashing stop sign or a flashing light or something to call somebody's attention to the intersection," Carol Kundmueller said.
Carol says in the ten years she has lived at the intersection she has seen as many crashes, some fatal.
The Ohio Highway Patrol says the intersection is marked to warn drivers of the stop sign ahead, and in recent years, ODOT added two stop signs on each side of the intersection.
"It's clearly marked and it's wide open. It's not like you can't see down 303 from either direction, and the amount of traffic through there is minimal. I don't know what else could be done to make the intersection safer," Trooper Scott Powers said.
Powers says the only thing that makes the intersection dangerous is the fact that many drivers ignore the stop signs.
A representative for ODOT District 3 says the intersection of Whitehead Road and State Route 303 will be re-evaluated since Wednesday's crash.
ODOT uses crash statistics and traffic studies to determine if an intersection needs improvements.
