MENTOR, Ohio -- The U.S. Coast Guard has issued a warning to all swimmers Friday, after the second teen drowning in Lake Erie this summer.

The Lake County Coroner has identified the latest victim as 17-year-old Anthony Alexander of Cleveland.

Witnesses say Alexander went under just before 7:00 Thursday night at Mentor Headlands State Park. They tell Fox 8 two good samaritans pulled the teen out of Lake Erie and started to perform CPR until help arrived. "We were walking along the beach and we saw them pumping his chest," one witness said.

Painesville Township paramedics quickly responded and took Alexander to LakeEast hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A stunned witness said, "It's sad. It's sad."

Lifeguards are on duty at the Mentor Headlands from noon until 7:00 p.m. They had already left for the day when Anthony had trouble.

The U.S. Coast Guard says this could happen to anyone.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Bill Colclough says, "The conditions on the Great Lakes are dangerous, but especially Lake Erie because it is the shallowest of the Great Lakes".

Colclough says the shallowness creates strong undercurrents and rip-tides that can pull people under in an instant. "The mouths of rivers and areas near bridges are especially turbulent and dangerous and should be avoided," Colclough said.

He recommends always wearing a life vest or flotation device when swimming. Colclough also suggests bringing someone along to sit on shore and keep an eye on you. Make sure the person watching you has a cellphone and knows your exact location on the beach. He says people should never swim alone, "The buddy system is extremely important. Always go out with at least one other person."
