Meldrum said Florence was in the beginning stages of dementia and had a history of running away from care centers. "That was my overriding, number one concern right from the get-go, that they would take her on in a locked unit," she said. "We didn't want it to be a prison, of course. We just wanted her to be safe."
Florence walked out of the nursing home around 8 p.m. on March 13th. She was headed down Detroit Rd. in Avon when a car struck and killed her, then kept on driving. Police said several bystanders stopped by to help the victim, but none of them actually witnessed the accident take place.
According to her family, Florence was supposed to be staying in a locked-down area. They said there was a security door in her room that she was able to disable. The nursing home sits more than 1,000 ft. from the main road where she was hit. Florence's family wants to know how she managed to walk to the road and why nobody noticed she was missing.
Reports claim Good Samaritan Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center was short staffed the night of the incident and there was a loud alarm going off, but no one went to find out why. The nursing facility's owners released this statement: "Good Samaritan appreciates the well-wishes and condolences of the community and hopes that the driver involved in this incident will be found quickly."
No arrests have been made. Anyone with information about the hit-skip should contact Avon police at (440)934-1234.
