A bizarre bomb scare turns into a dangerous police chase in Richfield early Monday morning.

Lt. Joe Davis, Public Information Officer for the Richfield Police Department says, the 31-year-old William Nickerson from Canfield, Ohio, called 911 around 5:45am. He claimed that he had followed a truck carrying a nuclear bomb from Boardman, Ohio in Mahoning county to Richfield.

A short time later, officers located Nickerson parked in front of the state Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation located at 4336 Cleveland Massillon Rd. Lt. Davis says, officers instructed Nickerson to leave the area and began conducting an extensive search for both the truck and alleged bomb.

The did not find either, but did notice Nickerson now parked across the street watching the officers.

Police attempted to talk to Nickerson, but he fled and lead them on a high speed chase.

Officers deployed spike strips but they only slowed the one ton Chevy truck.

Nickerson continued to drive south, on nothing but the rims, at a high rate of speed, with sparks flying until he spun out a half hour later at 71 South and Route 18. "I can't even imagine what he was thinking," says Lt. Davis.

Nickerson's charged with inducing panic, reckless operation and felony fleeing.

Tonight he's locked up at the Summit county jail
