    • I pledge Allegience to the United States of America - nowhere in this statement or in our constitution do I hear Spanish - or any other language. English spoken here - Pledges made in English!

OBERLIN, Ohio -- A decision by the Oberlin school board will keep students from saying the Pledge of Allegiance in class.

Shawn Marcin was upset when he realized that his daughter didn't say the Pledge of Allegiance in class. He brought the issue up to the board and found out that the pledge hadn't been said in Oberlin schools for about 30 years.

Shawn and other Oberlin residents were vocal about the issue, and forced the Board of Education to revisit the pledge issue.

After several meetings, Superintendent Geoffrey Andrews tried to come up with a compromise that would include everyone's feelings about the pledge.

But, taking out the words "under God" upset some people, and only reading it five times a month, upset others. Then there was the group that liked the fact that students didn't say the pledge. The board voted against the compromise 3-2.

So, students will continue to not say the pledge in school.

Marcin says, "Because that got voted down, now there are some who think the issue is over, no I'm sorry, I don't think it's going to be."
