CLEVELAND -
Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards pleaded not guilty Tuesday morning to a charge of misdemeanor assault.
Because Edwards did not appear in Cleveland Municipal Court on Tuesday -- he was not required to do so -- his attorney, Pat D'Angelo, entered the plea on the former Browns player's behalf.
Edwards, who currently plays for the New York Jets, is accused of punching Edward Givens, a club promoter and friend of Cavaliers superstar LeBron James, outside of a Downtown Cleveland nightclub in October.
"There was an argument and a fight, and it's been portrayed that he sucker-punched an individual. We deny that, and we'll sort all of that out through a court of law," D'Angelo told reporters after the brief hearing. "Clearly, Braylon is not acknowledging that he just went up to someone and punched them in the face for no reason."
Edwards' next court date is scheduled for Dec. 22. D'Angelo says Edwards is also facing a civil lawsuit.
