PARMA, Ohio -- Doctors thought he would never walk again. After spending more than a year in the hospital, a Parma man is home just in time for Thanksgiving!

In September 2008, 23-year-old Krieg Simmons was visiting a friend in Sheffield when a severe windstorm blew through Northeast Ohio. Simmons was just getting out of his car when a large tree branch came crashing down, hitting him on the head.

His mother Renee Simmons said, "They told him he would never be able to do anything useful again. They said he would just be bed bound."

Simmons was rushed to the hospital. After multiple brain surgeries and open heart surgery, Simmons is on the road to recovery.

Last week, he was released from the hospital. With the help of his parents, Simmons is learning how to walk again. His mother says the progress he's made over the past year is astonishing.

"He's talking. He knows everyone. He is just amazing. Every day there is something new," said Renee Simmons.

Krieg will continue undergoing outpatient therapy three days a week. If you would like to make a donation to help his family with medical expenses, you can do so by going to any First Merit Bank Branch and ask for the "Krieg Simmons" fund.
