NEW CUMBERLAND, OH-- Investigators with the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Department were called to the small community of New Cumberland near Mineral City Thursday morning, after a woman was found dead outside her home on Dawn Road.
The discovery was made by a relative and the woman's death is now being investigated as a homicide.
Neighbors are in disbelief.
Sally Wigfield tells Fox 8 News, "I was sickened by it, this is a quiet neighborhood we live in, you know we're in the country for the peace and quiet, never did I dream that something like that would happen in my neighborhood."
A house surrounded by yellow tape and a deputy standing guard at a crime scene is very unusual in this community near the historic village of Zoar, but a recent robbery and Thursday's homicide are making some residents feel unsafe for the first time in their lives.
Wigfield says "I mean we very seldom locked our doors but now that's something we do religiously before we leave the house."
Detectives have been interviewing friends and relatives of the victim, in their quest to find out who could have taken a life in such an unlikely setting.
A news conference is planned for Friday morning.
