WESTLAKE, OH-- -
A 12-year-old Westlake boy is in custody after stabbing a man Friday night in a Rite Aid parking lot.
Westlake police are not releasing the 40-year-old victim's name, by request of his family.
Police say the man was on his way to Westlake's Homecoming game with his son, when he witnessed two young teens shooting air soft pistols at other children in a wooded area near the intersection of Center Ridge Road and Dover Center Road.
The man chased the boy down and took his pistol. He then attempted to call police from the Rite Aid parking lot. That's when police say the 12-year-old pulled out a knife.
"He's a young kid. He was shooting an air soft gun at the boys down here at the trail ride. I chased him. I took his gun away. He gave me the wrong phone number three times, so he just reached in, grabbed the knife and stabbed me right in the heart," explains the frantic victim on the 911 call.
Police say the boy then took off running, but officers tracked him down and arrested him at his home.
"I'll have 20 years on in the spring and I've never seen somebody this young involved in this type of felonious assault," says Lt. Ray Arcuri with Westlake Police.
Lt. Arcuri says during questioning, the boy revealed some disturbing behavior.
"He didn't show a whole lot of remorse, which is troubling. I'm not really sure what kind of emotions he's going through right now."
Arcuri says police can only speculate the boy may have panicked at the thought of getting in trouble. He says the child--a 7th grader at Westlake--has a clean record.
The boy is now at the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Detention Center facing felonious assault charges.
Police say the victim is in critical but stable condition at St. John West Shore Hospital.
