CLEVELAND--Prayers have been answered for a Cleveland Catholic church.
In a letter to the pastor of St. Colman Catholic Church, Bishop Richard Lennon wrote "After much continuing prayer and discernment during the period of parish appeals, I now believe the needs of our church and the catholic community with both St.Colman and St. Stephen continuing as parishes."
Bishop Lennon's decision reverses his originial order to close the church on West 65th Street and merge it with St. Stephen on West 54th Street.
Back in March, The bishop announced a plan to eliminate 52 parishes in the eight-county diocese through mergers and closings. The diocese currently has 224 parishes serving about 766,000 Catholics.
Since the announcement, Pastor Bob Begin and his parishioners actively appealed Bishop Lennon's decision to close their church .
During tonight's mass at St. Colman's Church, parishioners will be told that the 129-year-old parish will remain open.
Bishop Lennon says he now has a better understanding of the social and community services at the St.Colman and the outreach to diverse neighborhoods. Lennon concluded the letter by saying, "The community may be better served with a vibrant, more financially sound St. Colman Parish."
