Once a month until November the Alliance Kiwanis Club will be distributing free food to anyone who meets income guidelines. For example, a family of four with an annual salary less than $41,000 qualifies.
If you meet the income guidelines, then you are eligible to receive free food regardless if you are utilizing food pantries or receiving food stamps.
Each month the Alliance Kiwanis Club buys food from the Akron Canton Regional Food Bank and gives it away. People getting the food walk away with things like 2 bags of potato chips, a big bag of potatoes, onions, a 5-lb block of cheese, three bags of lettuce, popcorn and crackers, to name just some of the items.
Dave Puterbaugh, the Kiwanis Club incoming president says, "We are a service organization and we feel committed to this community and it's something we saw as a need".
Puterbaugh says the first 450 to 500 people in line usually walk away with a crate full of food. Some people show up hours before the doors open to stand in line for the giveaway. Anna Doty, a grandmother, is one of those people. "I know a lot of people that's here. You see them every day in their walks of life so it's not just me, it's a lot of people. They run low so they need help."
Today's food distribution was held from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at 500 W. Main St. in Alliance. The food distribution took place in the rear of the facility and was distributed until it ran out.
Michael and Kendra Seich, who have 13 month old twins, call the food giveaway a godsend. "We always get low at the end of the month, the food, because we have food stamps so we come here and it actually helps us a lot", says Kendra. Her sister, Alysa Held, told FOX 8 that the twins, Aiden and Makenzie, sometimes eat only oatmeal when the family's food supply dwindles to almost nothing. Kendra adds, "Without this (program) we wouldn't be eating at all."
The Alliance Kiwanis Club has partnered with the Akron Canton Regional Food Bank in the distribution of the food.
