According to Chief Joseph C. Kocab with the Brooklyn Police Department, around 8:15 a.m. Saturday morning, police received a call of an attempted theft of an ATM machine outside the Taleris Credit Union at 1250 Granger Road in Brooklyn Heights.
Two males then attempted, unsuccessfully, to tow the ATM machine away in a maroon Jeep Cherokee.
Brooklyn Heights officers spotted the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. The suspects then fled from the officers and a chase ensued.
Police say the suspects went on I-480 to I-77 north before exiting the highway at the Harvard Road off ramp.
A Brooklyn Heights officer lost control of his vehicle on the off ramp and crashed. The officer was not hurt, but his vehicle was totaled on the ramp.
The suspects stopped in front of Browns Tavern then fled on foot. They were arrested by assisting officers from Cuyahoga Heights and Newburgh Heights police departments, in the backyard of 4025 East 53rd Street, and under a porch at 4019 East 53rd Street.
The first suspect captured was taken to Marymount Hospital.
The suspect vehicle had a thick rope dangling from the bumper that police believe was used in the attempted theft.
Jeremy Gum, 25, of 433 East 71st Street, and Anthony Hupcej, 21, of 4092 E. 57th Street, are currently being held in the Brooklyn Heights Jail.
They both face felony charges of breaking and entering, attempted theft, carrying a concealed weapon, having weapons under disability, vandalism, and fleeing.
The charges will be filed at the Cuyahoga County Prosecutors Office on Monday.
