GARRETTSVILLE, Ohio - Two people are dead after a skydiving accident.

According to officials with the Portage County Sheriff's office, it happened around 7:25 p.m. Saturday in the area of 1200 State Route 88.

Daniel Mathie and Sierra Thomas had taken off from the Cleveland Parachute Club, Parkman.

Authorities say, jump instructor Daniel Mathie, of Boardman and Sierra Thomas, of Brunswick, died during a tandem jump.

Witnesses say they got out of the aircraft okay, but the chute canopy failed to fully deploy.

Mathie and Thomas began to spiral out and couldn't stop. Both victims were found in an open field behind State Route 88 in Portage County.

The pilot of the plane told authorities he was 8 thousand feet above the ground and he saw some lines tangled when the chute was deployed.

30-year-old Mathie was a well trained instructor. It was Thomas' first jump.

The accident is under investigation.
