A Kent State University professor is hospitalized in serious condition, after being found beaten inside her Franklin Township home.
The Portage County sheriff says the professor's son, 18-year-old Sky Walker, has been charged with felonious assault in connection with the attack on his mother.
Doctor Trudy Steuernagel is a respected political science professor at Kent State University and is considered a leading authority on women's rights.
On Thursday, her students and colleagues became concerned when Steuernagel did not show up for her morning class.
Sheriff's deputies were sent to the professor's home and there they found her unconscious on the floor.
Portage County Sheriff David Doak says Sky Walker allegedly attacked a deputy, when she tried to arrest him.
He was eventually subdued by other deputies and is being held in the portage county jail on a bond of two million dollars.
Friends of Steuernagel tell Fox 8 news that her son Sky is autistic and she has devoted much of her life to caring for his special needs.
Her colleagues at Kent State are hoping doctors at Akron City Hospital can save her life, but they're also praying for her son.
Political Science Department chairman Steve Hook says, "Our number one concern is Trudy's recovery and number two for Sky's treatment now that he's been detained. He's a friend of our department and we are all pulling for him as well as his mother."
